1. Inca Trail, Peru
Follow the footsteps of the Inca on this 43 km long trail, explore the ruins of the city of Machu Picchu, and learn about the traditional way of life. Do not forget to bring a mirror and put it beneath yourself to deflect the spirits that are coming up from the earth.
2. Glenbrook Gorge Track, Australia
Take a Blue Mountain tour down the Glenbrook Gorge. Only 3 km long, this dynamic track will get your heart pumping. There is a good chance that you will get off-track lured by the beauty of the surrounding bush. Treat yourself to a refreshing dip in Jellybean Pool after you have completed the challenge.
3. Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Rainforests, glaciers, snowfields, moorland, deserts, and savannah, or in one word – Mt Kilimanjaro. Choose your way to the roof of Africa wisely, because your summit can be a success or a failure. Sleep under the stars because you will probably never be as close to them again.
4. The Narrows, USA
The Narrows photoYour route on this 26 km long journey will be the Virgin River. Your technique – wading and swimming. At least for a half of the route, where the river runs wall to wall. You can traverse the hike in one day, but we recommend taking in the dramatic winding canyons and sheer red walls at a more leisurely pace.
5. Torres del Paine Circuit, Patagonia
The diversity of the scenery and splendour of the nature at the southern tip of South America can hardly be topped. There are massive glaciers, ice floes, stunning volcanic landscapes, and steppe-like plains stretching as far as the eye can see. Your camera will overheat down here.
6. Indian Himalayas, India
If you are looking for isolation from the rest of the world, then the Indian side of the Himalayas might just be your thing. Only hard-core hikers venture this extremely challenging walk. You can choose to follow ancient trade routes along the mountain tops, or visit ancient monasteries in Ladakh or Little Tibet. Just keep in mind that it takes a lifetime to master the Himalayas, so do not expect to do it on a single hike.
7. Kungsleden, Sweden
The weak-hearted have no business on the legendary King’s Trail. On this 275 miles long traverse, you will enjoy the beauty of the Arctic Circle, glaciers, birch forests, and open tundra. Brush up against Mount Kebnekaise, the highest peak in Sweden.
8. Snowman Trek, Bhutan
By many, this is the most challenging route in the world, and you are lucky if you manage to finish it. The reason? Unpredictable weather in this part of the world. The trek traverses six mountains and crosses nine passes, most of which are at 16,000 feet or higher. It can only be done with a guided tour.
9. Laugavegurinn/Fimmvörðuháls Pass, Iceland
Hiking through lava fields, lichen-covered rocks, and glaciers will give you the answer to the question why this is Iceland’s most popular hiking trek. It packs more amazing views in its 50 miles than most longer hikes do.
10. Mountains of the Moon, Uganda
Elephants at 16,000 feet? No way. Actually, it is ‘yes way’ here at the Ruwenzori Range. The peaks, looming on the Uganda-Congo border, make up the highest range in Africa. The hike through mind-bending forests of giant tree-groundsel and lobelias can take three to five days, depending on how strong your spirit is.
